Damaru Damaru, invocation of Lord Siva

The damaru is the ‘hourglass’ drum associated with Siva. Siva is fond of music and dance. In particular, rhythm is enjoyed by Siva, as it reflects the universal rhythm which maintains the cosmos. Shankara and Hara are also names of Siva. The Ganges River (Ganga) is said to spring from the matted locks of Siva, who dwells in the Himalayas at the source of the Ganges. Goddess Parvati is Siva’s ‘other half’, meaning that the Divine is neither male nor female, but a ‘synthesis’ of both.
